Even though it was originally founded in 2011 by the artists, Crystal Baxley and Stefan Ransom, and then taken over by The Hollywood Theatre a year later, in 2012, Getting To Know You(Tube) is still basically a recurring series which journeys into YouTube's deepest darkest caverns of collective consciousness, unearthing hidden treasures, whilst stretching the boundaries of what Youtube was meant for.
YouTube in some way, shape, or form. Then following each presentation the audience can ask the presenter questions or show video responses. Once all of the presentations are complete for the evening, the floor is open for anyone at the event to introduce themselves and play their favorite YouTube picks with the crowd.
So far there have been presentations about interspecies friendship, copwatching, cult-life, tutorials on how to hold your own in a conversation with a hard-core Trekkie, live YouTube karaoke, and videos created as new works of art, specifically for the event. Getting to Know You(Tube) has also been featured at the Open Engagement Conference, PICA’s 2013 TBA Festival, and Design Week Portland 2013.
As ardent advocates of the platform, new hosts Gabi Villaseñor and Helmy Membreño are excited to bring back the series with a collection of amazing presenters who live locally to Portland. In fact, they are so excited, they've even allowed me to share with you this amazing new footage of Batman in Action...
OK. I admit. That Batman youtube video had nothing to do with GTKY, despite being my favorite Youtube clip. So if you'd like for some more information on this series, please visit the Getting To Know You(Tube) or Hollywood Theatre website
