LIKE FATHER, LIKE DAUGHTER - MY DADDY IS A HERO

Like Father, Like Daughter - CoverI've been interviewing independent comic book creators for quite a while now, and during that time, I've always enjoyed hearing what iconic figure, notable event, or historic era has influenced their work the most. Now a good example of this can be clearly seen in the following conversation I had with my friend Kathryn (from 'Comic Uno' fame), who's currently in the process of publishing her new comic book. Here, check this out...

1) What are your own origins, Kathryn?   I’ve been reading comic books ever since I was a kid; when my Dad first introduced me to the Silver Age Superman. But if truth be told, I really started to get emotionally invested in the medium when Sam Raimi released his Spider-Man series of films and there were all of those great superhero cartoons, broadcast in the late-90s and early-2000s.

In high school, I made a YouTube channel that reviewed comic books (which I still do to this day, under the name, 'Comic Uno'), and now, I work as a journalist for 'DC Universe' and 'Newsarama'. I also have bylines with 'IGN', 'Fandom', and 'TV Guide', along with writing comic books of my own devising, such as 'Like Father, Like Daughter' (which I currently have a Kickstarter for).

2) What inspired you to create, ‘Like Father, Like Daughter’?
Actually, the story started out as a screenplay I wrote way back in college. But after a while, I began to see the potential of turning it into a comic book because it allowed me to explore the story through a medium I love.

3) In your own words, how would you describe this story?   The overall story follows the exploits of a girl in high school called CaseyCasey Ryder, who has father that left her family to be the world’s only superhero. During the time of its conception, right up to today, I wanted to tell a story about family.

4) What song would you say best represents this comic and why?   To answer this question I’m going to select The Beatles song,  “Hey Jude”, because Paul wrote it for John Lennon’s son, Julian, following Lennon’s divorce, and so it includes lyrics that really resonate with Casey’s personal journey.

5) If you could get a celebrity – either living or dead – to promote your wares, who would you choose, and why would you want to choose this particular person?
A lot of my work has been influenced by stories featuring Spider-Man, so the late, great, Stan Lee, would be a pretty good fit.

6) What have you learned about yourself through this endeavor?   I think I’ve really found my voice in my own writing, as I can see a little bit of myself in all of the characters I've created for this book. Well, everyone except for Jessica (Casey’s Mom), because I really hope I’m nothing like her.

7) If ‘LF, LD’ had a motto, what would it be?   Don’t judge a book by its cover’.

And on that note, I'd like to thank Kathryn for telling us about her comic book, 'Like Father, Like Daughter', before encouraging you to check out her WebsiteFacebook, Twitter, and YouTube pages.
