FILM FRANCHISE CROSSOVERS: THE BLOCKBUSTER STUDY

Batman Vs Darth VaderDid you know that Disney could potentially earn over half a billion dollars if they ever decided to make a film starring both the X-Men and some of the characters currently populating the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, quite recently, mobilewins.co.uk carried out a study where they collated data from 10 popular franchises in order to see which film series boast the most feasible crossover potential, basing their findings on three specific factors... popularity, profitability, and format metrics.

The data they collected and analyzed, included, global search volume, Twitter sentiment ranking, Rotten Tomatoes score, IMDb score, budget, global box office earnings, total years spanned, current film count, average film certification, and average film runtime, whereas the film franchises they focused on, included...

  • DC Universe
  • Star Wars
  • X-Men
  • Ghostbusters
  • Star Trek
  • James Bond
  • Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Lord of the Rings
  • Jurassic Park
  • Fast & Furious

Along with looking at the potential earnings (resulting from crossovers), their study also looked to identify which franchise films prove the most popular with fans online, as well as what character in each of these franchises has the best crossover potential. Here, look at the following two infographics to see their final results.

Now only time will tell whether any of these potential crossovers are on the horizon. Although the one thing I can say for certain, is that when done correctly, the reputation and financial benefits of big-name, on-screen brand collaboration can be profitable for the filmmakers and beneficial for the fans.
