CARL'S POP CULTURE CORNER - THE SPIDER AND THE BAT

Batman / Spider-ManHello, folks. My name is Carl, Carl Hilliard, and like many of you out there, I'm a dedicated fan of popular culture. As a kid, I grew up watching movies and reading comic books starring heroes like Spider-Man and Batman, amongst others, and have since been able to embrace a fandom that truly tries to bring everyone together.

Spider-Man
My passion for comic book superheroes began way back in 2002 when my dad took me to see the first 'Spider-Man' film starring Tobey Maguire. In many ways, it was a truly eye-opening experience, as I was introduced to a cast of colorful characters who I then went on to see in many children's magazines (those old ones that came with the free toys), comic books (published by Marvel), TV shows ('Spider-Man: The New Animated Series'), and of course, movies (say no more). Heck, my whole outlook on life stems from my passion for Spider-Man and his adventures, some of which, have been written and illustrated by my favorite creators, such as Dan Slott, Nick Spencer, Todd McFarlane, Stefano Caselli, Alex Ross, and many, many more. To this day, I try to keep up to date with all things Web-Head, and I have an utmost desire for bringing this passion to all of you out there.

Batman
Along similar lines, I'm also a big fan of Batman, too, because when Peter Parker's alter ego introduced me to the colorful world of comic book superheroes, I then decided to dive deep into the sinister world of the Dark Knight. But unlike Spider-Man, Batman is a drastically different character and his adventures are usually starker and grittier in tone, adventures written and illustrated by great creators, such as Jim Lee, Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, Jeph Loeb, and Frank Miller, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Although, the one thing they both have in common, is that they both represent what a true hero is meant to be, despite them epitomizing the two different sides of their genre! One is dark and broody, while the other is fun and adventurous. But together, their numerous adventures have given me years of enjoyment that's changed the way I look at the world around me. Out of curiosity, what's your favorite comic book adventure? To discover mine, please come back and check out my monthly column... 'Carl's Pop Culture Corner'.
