RED ZONE - MY INTERVIEW WITH CULLEN BUNN

Red Zone - Cover ALast week, the team over at AWA Studios kindly allowed me to share several pages from their upcoming four-issue miniseries, 'Red Zone', which focuses on an unassuming American professor who's recruited by the U.S. government to carry out a top-secret mission in Russia. But if you missed this excerpt, don't worry, because you can check it out by clicking here. Otherwise, you can just go with the flow and dive into the following Q and A with the author of the aforementioned comic book miniseries, Cullen Bunn.

Forbidden planet

Red Zone - 1
1) Name three words that best describe who you are.   I'd say, loyal, supportive, and neurotic.

2) What inspired you to create, 'Red Zone'?   This story first came about when I had a meeting with the chief creative officer for AWA Studios, Axel Alonso, in order to kick around a few ideas for an action-adventure starring a quirky and unexpected lead. I then put together some ideas of my own, all of which I liked quite a bit, and eventually, 'Red Zone' rose to the top of the list as the first story I should tackle.

Red Zone - 2
3) In your own words, how would you describe this story?   'Red Zone' tells the tale of a humble university professor who, at the behest of the U.S. government, joins a military operation in the heart of Russia. But once he and the rest of the team get there, the professor suddenly finds himself having to face a veritable legion of strange assassins and murderers without any support from his military escort. The surprise, though, is that he's much more prepared for this brash turn of events than you might expect.

4) What song would you say best represents this miniseries and why?   To answer this question, I'd like to select The Beatles song, 'Back in the U.S.S.R.', because it makes a lot of sense based on the motivations of the characters who appear in 'Red Zone'.

Red Zone - 3
5) If you could get a celebrity - either living or dead - to promote your wares, who would you choose, and why would you want to choose this particular person?   I'd choose the king of promotion, P. T. Barnum, but I would like the version depicted in the 2017 film, 'The Greatest Showman', as that guy seemed all right and he could sing.

6) What's the one thing about 'Red Zone' that might surprise people?   I think people will be surprised by the weirdness of the cast of ne'er-do-wells who plague our heroes in this story. Well, even though it starts off as a real-world action-adventure, after a while, we definitely stretch the boundaries of reality and get into some... Bondian territories.

'Red Zone' is a four-issue monthly miniseries published by AWA Studios, written by Cullen Bunn, and illustrated by Mike Deodato. The first issue will be released in March, 2023, and for further information, please feel free to check out the official Website, Instagram, and Twitter pages for AWA Studios.
