FOUR FILM LOCATIONS FEATURED IN THE 1984 VERSION OF GHOSTBUSTERS

In June, 1984, Columbia Pictures released a fantastic film about a group of New Yorkers who try to save the city from a swarm of ghosts. The film's called, 'Ghostbusters', and it's directed by the filmmaker, Ivan Reitman, and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Sigourney Weaver, and Ernie Hudson. Roughly six minutes into the film, three of the main characters, Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, and Dr. Egon Spengler (as played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis respectively), meet at the prestigious New York Public Library so they can investigate a strange phenomenon that's happening there. Eventually, they discover the phenomenon downstairs, in the basement, where they confront and are then attacked by the first of many ghosts. This basement isn't located inside the New York Public Library, but rather, inside the Los Angeles Central Library, which is located at 630 West 5th Street, Los Angeles, California.

After being attacked, the trio obtain the funds needed to establish a headquarters for their paranormal business, which they decide should be located inside an abandoned firehouse in New York City. Or is it? Saying so, because, similar to the previous film location, the exterior for this one is based in NYC, whereas its interior is based in Los Angeles. Specifically, Fire Station 23, which is situated at 225 East 5th Street, Los Angeles, California.

The guys experience their first successful mission when they're asked to capture a ghost, a lovable one, aptly named Slimer, who's annoying the guests at the fictitious, Sedgewick Hotel. In real-life, this hotel is called The Biltmore Los Angeles and it can be seen in many other films, including 'Vertigo' (1958), 'Beverly Hills Cop' (1984), 'Pretty Woman' (1990), and 'Oppenheimer' (2023).

Near the end of the film, the guys discover that one of their clients, Dana Barrett (as played by Sigourney Weaver), and her neighbor, Louis Tully (as played by Rick Moranis), have both been transformed into supernatural entities, and along with the ghosts previously captured (among others), are planning to summon the god Gozer (as played by Slavitza Jovan) and bring about the end of humankind. They plan to do this from the top of the apartment building where Dana and Louis live, which in reality, is a 19-floor residential building that was constructed in 1929 and designed by the architectural firm, Schwartz & Gross. The aforementioned building doesn't have an official name, but since the release of this film, it's been called The Shandor Building, The Ghostbusters Building, Spook Central, and The Shandor Apartments, keeping in mind that in the film, Shandor is the surname of the Gozer-worshiping architect who designed the building.
