EMPIRE OF THE SAURIAN - MY INTERVIEW WITH NARAYAN LIU

The Coming of the Warlords - 1 'Empire of the Saurian' is an ongoing comic book series set in The Land of Ten Thousand, which is a sprawling supercontinent where dinosaurs roam freely and human kingdoms thrive and survive. The series blends mysticism, philosophy, and brutal dinosaur-mounted warfare in a world ruled by rival kingdoms and would-be gods. Want to know more? Then please check out the following interview with the writer of the aforementioned series, Narayan Liu.

1) Name three words that best describe who you are.   I'd say, writer, activist, and father.

2) What inspired you to create, 'Empire of the Saurian'?   I was inspired to create the series due to my lifelong passion for dinosaurs, along with my role as a democratic activist working in China. I also desired to share some of my Chinese heritage with my daughter, albeit in a fun way.

3) In your own words, how would you describe your introductory one-shot, 'The Coming of the Warlords'?   The one-shot is about personal missions versus the greater good, and regardless of the outcome, how certain people fight to lead a society. After all, a battle for leadership is sometimes nothing more than just that... a battle.

4) What song would you say best represents your comic book series and why?   I'd like to select 'Apocalypse Please' by Muse because there's a lot in that song about faith and desperation. I also think the song's ending fits the story fairly well; even if it isn't about faith in a god, it's still a story about believing in saviors.

5) If you could get a celebrity - either living or dead - to promote your wares, who would you choose, and why would you want to choose this particular person?   I would love one of my favorite Chinese actors to promote the series, BD Wong, who's probably best known for starring in the 'Jurassic Park' film franchise.

6) What's the one thing about 'Empire of the Saurian' that might surprise people?   Without giving too much away, I wanted to play with the idea of leaders and tyrants, heroes and villains, and whoever else people decide to root for or oppose. So, I'll just say the series does have a happy ending, which may surprise some, but I can't say the same about the one-shot. That's what the dinosaurs are for... to make the story fun!
