LUNA LANIEEE - COSPLAYING WITH A MANGA SMILE

Luna Lanieee Cosplay
There once was a lady called Luna. Who decided to dress up as a tuna. And then, one day. To her, dismay. She ran straight into the big kahuna. Or alternately, please completely disregard my opening statement, and check out the following interview I carried out with an amazing cosplayer, named... Luna Lanieee.

1) What are your own origins, Luna? Plus what path did you take in life prior to getting to where you are today?   I'm the youngest of four children and as a child I use to live near Los Angeles. This is where my passion for fantasy and games originated from, and where I became involved in acting and professional modeling. I always had my collection of comic books and manga, nearby, during countless hours I spent traveling to and from auditions. When my older brother bought me my first gaming console -- a Nintendo 64 -- I would play Xena and Pokemon Snap for hours on end. I started MMORPG gaming (Runescape) in middle school as a way of combating boredom and discovered I could make friends in the gaming community.

Luna Lanieee Cosplay RikkuI always liked dressing up, and when I started working at an entertainment company that portrayed different princesses and characters, I met a co-worker who told me about cosplay. She also asked me to be part of a group for an upcoming Con, and as a way of warming up my costuming skills, I decided to dress up as a character I loved the most -- Rikku -- and go to a smaller con in my area.

Well, the experience changed my life. The reception I received in my costume was overwhelming. An amazing photographer named Patrick Sun worked with me for hours and took the most amazing pictures of my Rikku Cosplay. Days later they hit the internet and the rest is now history.

2) What are the most persistent comments you’ve received from your followers?   I receive a lot of support from my followers, and I actually think of them as friends because most have been Gaming or Cosplaying for years and they help me out. They have given me great advice from who they would like to see me cosplay to how to go about constructing my props.

Now I do get the occasional troll or disgruntled person who will say "oh this cosplayer did that character better", or "you can't do that character you're too short".  But I ignore the negatively and just do what I like.

3) What is your ‘regular’ job? And does it in any way shape or form aide you as a Cosplayer?   I mentioned that I work for an entertainment company in Atlanta, Georgia, and I dress up as princesses or characters primarily for children's parties. When I first started I was super shy but I got more comfortable being in a role, as it helped me be less self conscience about performing and with my Cosplay.

Cosplayer At Comic Shop4) How did your friends, family, and work colleagues first react to the news that you like to cosplay?   My family is used to me being creative and crafty so I have their total support. I'm seriously more of a loner so my friends are my supporters online and they are AWESOME.

5) How do you decide what Cosplay costume to wear for a convention? And who makes them?   I only pick characters I love or that I have played in games. I make most of my costumes -- I just started to learn to sew so it should be interesting. I also buy some premade articles, for example, I got these amazing vintage gloves from a local costume shop for my 'Heartseeker Ashe'. I also buy my wigs online and style them myself, which is something I have learned from my real job.

6) What have you learnt about yourself whilst Cosplaying? And were their any unforeseen obstacles you had to contend with?   I've learned how to time manage and to be more outgoing with people. The unforeseen obstacles are usually financial, as I want to do so much but then run out of money lol!

7) What was the best / worst convention you ever attended?   I have never attended a bad convention, and I really think if you look at every convention as a learning experience or just meeting new people they all can be great.

8) What would be your dream Cosplay gig and outfit?   I would love to be able to travel to international cons and even to the San Diego Comic Con. And any of Yaya Han's costumes would be a dream outfit -- she is my queen ( :

9) Has their ever been an outfit you just did not like wearing? And if so, why?   I once made this Rave themed Disney costume for a group event that I didn't really like to wear because I don't like the theme.

10) Do you have a credo you live by?   I don't know if its a credo but I have something I tattooed on my hip that means the most to me -- "Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is wing'd Cupid painted blind".

Sigh! What a lovely phrase! And my-oh-my, what a lovely cosplayer, too! Right, dear readers? So when you have the time please click on over to Luna Lanieee's facebook and twitter pages. And if you do, please remember to be nice.
