FOUR OF THE MOST ICONIC PROPS SEEN ON THE SILVER SCREEN

Prop CultureEver since it first came out in March of this year, Disney Plus has grown increasingly popular because it has given us Brits the chance to see our favorite films wherever and whenever we want. In fact, it has started to become so, so popular, there's even been a rise in subscribers due to the re-release of such old school classics as 'Mary Poppins', for instance, with a 22 percent increase, as well as 'Star Wars', with searches multiplying by the hundreds. So, to celebrate our favorite films becoming more readily available, here, let’s take a look at some of the most iconic props featured on film...

flying umbrella
Mary Poppins

Have you ever wondered what P.L. Travers was thinking about when she came up with the idea of a flying umbrella? I have, quite often in fact, and each time I think of this, I find myself conjuring up two possible scenarios. Firstly, she must have hated the rain, otherwise, she wouldn't have imagined someone flying over the clouds, similar to her creation, Mary Poppins. And secondly, it’s entirely possible that she had some sort of strange obsession with luxury umbrellas. Either way, Ms. Travers managed to come up with one hell of a brilliant idea, that's for sure, and it began in a book before evolving into two major motion pictures developed by Disney, first in 1964 and then in 2018.

lightsaber
Star Wars

If I made a noise that sounded like a bee farting, what noise would you think I was trying to imitate? Would it be:  (A) A Monkey Scratching His Own Nuts. (B) A Donkey Kicking His Own Ass. Or (C) A Jedi Practicing With Their Own Lightsaber. So go on, have a guess, but only guess 'C', or else, I won’t be able to present you with the following pre-written facts. Well, did you know that the lightsaber can be used by a member of the Jedi and the Sith and are largely powered by kyber crystals? And if not, don’t worry, because not a lot of people do. Aside from the 50 million subscribers who signed up for Disney Plus over the last five months, along with those die-hard Star Wars fanatics who know that a kyber crystal chooses the wielder, not the other way round, and come in a vast array of different colors, ranging from red, to purple, to yellow, to green, depending on its connection with the host.

magic carpet
Aladdin

In my most humble opinion, Aladdin has some of the most amazing props at his disposal. Well, not only does he have a magic carpet that can fly him all over Agrabah, but in addition to this, he also has a magic lamp that can grant him three wishes, apart from a wish to grant him more wishes. In any event, Aladdin is still one lucky beggar, keeping in mind that he's friends with a cheeky monkey named Abu and a lovely princess named Jasmine. Bless him.

Mjölnir
Thor

In Norse mythology, Mjölnir,  also known as Thor’s mighty hammer, is one of the most fearsome weapons ever created because it can level mountains, flatten dirt, and look real-good in a fight. BOOM! Fortuitously, its comic book equivalent is equally as powerful. Although, in retrospect, it was forged by dwarves in the heart of a dying star, and can only be wielded by someone who's worthy. Namely, Thor, also known as Odinson, who's never used it to build a house or hang up a picture frame. Tut-tut-tut! Naughty boy.

So there you have it, folks. Four of the top Hollywood props featured on film! So, what do you think of this selection? Do you think it's good? Do you think it's bad? Or do you think it's bloody ugly? Either way, please leave your thoughts in the comment section below.
