ROYAL MAIL'S BATMAN STAMP COLLECTION (2021)

In September, 2021, the Royal Mail issued a series of stamps that celebrates one of the most popular heroes in the DC Universe, namely, Batman, the fabled Dark Knight Detective. They designed 18 stamps in total, with each one measuring 35mm by 35mm and illustrated by the artist, Jim Cheung, and the colorist, Laura Martin.

Batwoman (First Class)

Trivia: Now, unlike the current version of Batwoman, the original version of Batwoman wasn't Bruce Wayne's cousin or a lesbian, but rather, a possible love interest who occasionally fought by Batman's side until she was killed by the Bronze Tiger in issue 485 of 'Detective Comics' (vol. 1).


Batgirl (First Class)

Trivia: There have been several females to adopt the guise of Batgirl since her initial creation in 1961, including, Betty Kane (Kathy Kane's niece/cousin), Barbara Gordon (Jim Gordon's niece/daughter), Cassandra Cain (Lady Shiva's daughter), and Stephanie Brown (Cluemaster's daughter).


Nightwing (First Class)

Trivia: Dick Grayson was one of the first kid-sidekicks to emerge from his mentor's shadow by establishing his own superhero identity. It happened in the mid-1980s when he shed his Robin persona in order to become the leader of the Teen Titans, Nightwing.


Robin (First Class)

Trivia: Near the end of issue 1 of 'Batman Incorporated' (vol. 2), Batman's son, Damian Wayne (a.k.a. Robin the brat wonder), said that he's going to be a vegetarian because he rescued a cow from being killed and hated the thought of murdering animals for 'human pleasure'.


Alfred (First Class)

Trivia: When Alfred made his comic book debut in 1943, he was called Alfred Beagle, not Alfred Pennyworth, and was depicted as an overweight British butler who had a passion for investigating crime. Well, that was until he had a cosmetic update and a slight name change, but essentially, was the same character.


The Joker (First Class)

Trivia: The Joker's maniacal grin was based on a facial deformity sustained by Conrad Veidt's character in the 1928 silent film, 'The Man Who Laughs'. Conrad's character was called Gwynplaine and he was an English man who was disfigured due to his noble lineage.


Harley Quinn (First Class)

Trivia: Despite being known as 'The Joker's girlfriend', Harley Quinn has managed to cement intimate relationships with two of her fellow Bat-foes, most notably, Deadshot (from the Suicide Squad), as well as Poison Ivy (a.k.a. Pamela Isley).


The Penguin (First Class)

Trivia: According to his creator, Bob Kane, he was inspired to create The Penguin after he saw an advertising mascot featured on a packet of 'Kool' cigarettes. The mascot was in circulation from 1935 to the 1960s and was a small black and white penguin that wore a top hat and held a cane.


Catwoman (First Class)

Trivia: When Bill Finger and Bob Kane first created Catwoman, they initially based her appearance on two movie stars from the 'Golden Age' of cinema. They were Hedy Lamarr (best known for starring in the biblical epic, 'Samson and Delilah') and Jean Harlow (also known as the original 'Platinum Blonde').


Poison Ivy (First Class)

Trivia: Similar to Catwoman's initial appearance, Poison Ivy's initial appearance was modeled after a vintage celebrity from yesteryear. Although, in her case, it wasn't two movie stars, but rather, one popular pin-up, Bettie Page, and on a couple of occasions, Ivy even sported Bettie's notable Southern accent.


The Riddler (First Class)

Trivia: In the video game, 'Batman: Arkham City', The Riddler was diagnosed with having a 'psychological disorder beyond his control', mainly because he's a 'fanatic narcissist' with a 'severe obsessive compulsion'. Otherwise known as, 'a nutcase who can't help but leave clues alluding to a crime he's about to commit'!

Batman (First Class)

Trivia: The name, Bruce Wayne, was derived from two historical revolutionaries: Robert the Bruce (the Scottish revolutionary) and 'Mad' Anthony Wayne (an American revolutionary). Plus phonetically, Bruce's name also sounds similar to his creator, Bob Kane (a.k.a. Robert Kahn).
