PAW & ORDER VOL. 1: THE GRILLED CHEESE CAPER - MY INTERVIEW WITH JASON PLATT

In August 2025, Papercutz released a fun graphic novel intended for children aged six to ten years old. Titled, 'Paw & Order Vol. 1: The Grilled Cheese Caper', the aforementioned graphic novel follows the jovial exploits of two private detectives, Purrlock and Marlowe, as they embark on a quest to find out who stole all of the sandwiches at the annual Grilled Cheese Festival. 1) Name three words that best describe who you are.   I'd say, creative, funny, and welcoming.

2) What inspired you to create, 'Paw & Order Vol. 1: The Grilled Cheese Caper'?   I've loved reading a good mystery ever since I was a little kid. Even though there weren't many choices back then, I remember reading Encyclopedia Brown and the Hardy Boys series of books, all of which inspired me to create this story, as it's the type of story kids like me would have loved to read while growing up. So this is for them. This is for the kids.

3) In your own words, how would you describe your story?   The story revolves around two private detectives, Purrlock and Marlowe (a cat and a dog, respectively), who one day visit the annual Grilled Cheese Festival, only to discover that all of the grilled cheese sandwiches have been stolen. So, to find out who committed this dastardly deed, they analyse clues and question several suspects, including Jinny Giraffe, Allan Alligator, and Purrlock's nemesis, Meowiearty, until the mystery is finally solved.

4) What song would you say best represents 'Paw & Order Vol. 1' and why?   Due to the way they're constructed, I often see my stories as storyboards for films, so I don't think a single song would be appropriate. A score would be better, such as the one John Williams composed for 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', 'Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra', as it has a nice blend of adventure and comedy.

5) If you could get a celebrity - either living or dead - to promote your wares, who would you choose, and why would you want to choose this particular person?   It's a toss-up between Charles M. Schulz and Jim Henson, because both men have influenced my creativity and my sense of humor. Despite no longer being with us, their work continues to inspire me to this day.

6) What's the one thing about 'Paw & Order Vol. 1' that might surprise people?   Right before the big reveal at the end of the story, there's a moment when Marlowe breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader. He lets them know that they have everything they need to solve the mystery, and even points to the pages they might want to revisit, just in case they'd like to do one more review before the solution is revealed. As a result, the readers don't just read the mystery; they're invited to solve it right alongside the main characters, which can be surprising to some.
