From 1961 to 2017, the English author, John le Carré, wrote nine novels - generally referred to as the Circus/George Smiley novels - which explore the shadowy world of espionage, including 'The Spy Who Came in from the Cold', 'The Looking Glass War', and 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'. John sadly passed away at the end of 2020, but thanks to Dark Horse Comics, his shadowy world lives on within the pages of their three-issue comic-book series, 'John le Carré's: The Circus--Losing Control'. What now follows is my Q and A with the writer of the aforementioned series, Matt Kindt. Please enjoy.
1) Name three words that best describe who you are. I'd say, coffee, ink, and coffee.
2) What inspired you to write, 'John le Carré's: The Circus--Losing Control'? I was asked to write this series by John le Carré's family, so their trust and confidence in me became the real inspiration, especially since I've been a fan of John's work for a long time.
3) In your own words, how would you describe your story? It's an old-school spy story about someone trying to figure out how to circumvent modern-day technology.
4) What song would you say best represents 'The Circus' and why? To answer this question, I'd like to select 'Coffee Cold' by Galt MacDermot because it's the perfect song for walking around at night and spying on people.
5) If you could get a celebrity - either living or dead - to promote your wares, who would you choose, and why would you want to choose this particular person? I'd choose the dearly departed director, David Lynch, but I wouldn't want him to waste his time back on earth promoting my wares. If anything, I'd rather he do whatever he wants to do with the extra time.
6) What's the one thing about 'The Circus' that might surprise people? That comics are capable of capturing the vibe of a John le Carré spy story. Entering the project, I honestly wasn't sure if the comic-book medium could capture the character, the backstory, and the richness of one of his novels. But now, I think comics can do it in small doses, which has made me proud of what the medium is capable of.
