EXPLORING THE CREATIVE WORLD OF CLIVE BARKER

Clive's Covers On May 20, 2026, TidalWave Comics will be releasing a new biographical comic book devoted to the life and career of Clive Barker, the acclaimed British writer, filmmaker, and visual artist. To celebrate this upcoming release, I thought it would be a jolly good idea to present a selection of books he has either written or contributed to. Books of Blood: Volume One (Reissue cover edition published by Sphere Books in 1984): A collection of six stories penned by Clive that fuse urban nightmares, body horror, and supernatural mythmaking.

The Thief of Always

The Thief of Always: A Fable (First edition published by HarperCollins in 1992): A dark fantasy novel about a ten-year-old boy lured into a sinister, magical house, fully illustrated by Clive.

Abarat

Abarat (Mass-market paperback edition published by HarperCollins in 2004): A dark fantasy about a sixteen-year-old girl who's compelled to defend a magical archipelago plagued by dark forces, complemented by Clive's own painted artwork.

The Hellhound Heart

The Hellbound Heart (20th anniversary edition published by Earthling Publications in 2007): A dark erotic‑horror novella about desire and damnation, which includes original artwork by Clive and introductions by Peter Atkins and Ashley Laurence.

The Painter, The Creature, and The Father of Lies

The Painter, The Creature, and The Father of Lies (First edition published by Earthling Publications in 2011): A nonfiction compendium of essays, interviews, and reflections on Clive's creative life, enriched by his commentary and archival pieces.

Horrorology

Horrorology (Hardcover edition published by Jo Fletcher Books in 2015): A horror anthology consisting of twelve stories that examine the lexicon of fear, featuring artwork by Clive and one of his short stories, 'Afraid', which is a visceral exploration of terror and desire.

The History of the Devil

The Clive Barker Playscripts: The History of the Devil (Standard paperback edition published by The Clive Barker Archive in 2017): A full theatrical script written by Clive in the 1980s that stages the Devil's trial across human history, accompanied by his notes, drafts, photos, and other archival materials.
