In the trailers we see quite a bit of this sassy criminal clown, once known as Harleen Quinzel, who was a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum that became obsessed and fell in love with the Joker. Throughout the years Harley Quinn has appeared in television, animated films, and video games, and there always seems to be some slight consistency in her personality and outfit.
What seems to be bothering everyone, however, especially feminists, is the new look that Warner Bros chose for her. It seems that fans were hoping to see Harley Quinn in her traditional jester costume and not in some sexy mini shorts and a t-shirt. What many people don’t know is that her image is inspired on a different universe, The New 52.
Margot Robbie, the actress portraying Harley Quinn, explained that while deciding on the costume, they 'tried every variation of it, but a street-look fit the character better', especially since it’s her first appearance. Maybe for the sequels they will go for the jester look? It’ll depend on the characters journey and what they want her to become in film, plus she is already massively popular with only a few scenes shown in trailers. Following great performances of male villains like Heath Ledger’s Joker, Tom Hardy’s Bane, Aaron Eckhart’s Two Face, as well as Danny DeVito’s Penguin, Robbie has a great weight on her shoulders to make Harley Quinn the next big female villain since Michelle Pfeiffer’s 1992 version of Catwoman.
