But before long, his landlady begins to suspect that he might be a madman, stalking the streets at night and murdering women nearby. The press has labelled this madman the Avenger, and according to both journalists and the police, he targets women with blonde hair - hair remarkably similar to that of the landlady's daughter, whom the lodger is gradually growing closer to.
