TIDALWAVE TRIVIA: A SPOTLIGHT ON WES CRAVEN

Wes Craven - 1 On October 29, 2025, TidalWave Comics will be releasing a new biographical comic book devoted to the life and career of the American filmmaker, Wes Craven, who sadly passed away in 2015. Aptly titled, 'Tribute: Wes Craven', the aforementioned comic book was written by me, David Lee Andrews, and illustrated by Martin Giménez. Today, I will present a selection of tantalizing trivia I wasn't able to include, along with a few images from the comic. Please enjoy.

Forbidden planet

1) A Date With a Celebrity: Wes was born on August 2, 1939, in Cleveland, Ohio, which is the same American city where several other notable celebrities were also born, such as Arsenio Hall, Tracy Chapman, and Halle Berry.

2) Challenging Faith: While studying at Wheaton College, he edited the literary magazine, 'Kodon', in which he advocated for Christian arts to be more daring and inclusive. Despite being a Baptist at the time, Wes urged artists to challenge norms, even within faith-based contexts.

3) A Star Is Porn: In the late 1960s, Wes left his teaching job to become a pornographic film director. In the documentary, 'Inside Deep Throat', he said that much of his early work involved him writing or editing many hardcore X-rated films, sometimes both.

4) Kicking the Dogs: Wes reportedly walked out of a screening of Quentin Tarantino's 1992 film, 'Reservoir Dogs', during the infamous torture scene. When he heard about this, Quentin quipped that his film was too tough for the director of 'The Last House on the Left', which he found deeply ironic.

5) No Screaming: When it was initially offered to him, Wes didn't want to direct the first 'Scream' film because he was trying to distance himself from the horror genre. But upon reading the script, he recognized its originality, and the rest, as they say, is history. Horror history.

6) It's a Bird: Wes had a passion for birdwatching ever since he was a kid. In 2010, he joined the board of directors of Audubon California, which is a regional chapter of one of the most respected bird conservation organizations in America. Then in 2014, he wrote the first in a series of articles for 'Martha's Vineyard Magazine', using birdwatching as a lens for satirical moral fables and environmental musings.

7) Comic Book Connection: Between 2014 and 2016, Liquid Comics released 'Coming of Rage', a five-part comic book series co-written by Wes Craven and Steve Niles, with artwork provided by Francesco Biagini. The story revolves around a young man named Ritchie who goes on the run with a werewolf and a zombie after discovering he's becoming a vampire.

'Tribute: Wes Craven' is a biographical comic book written by David Lee Andrews, illustrated by Martin Giménez, and scheduled for publication by TidalWave Comics.
