Shuna's Journey

An illustration from the 1983 watercolor graphic novel written and drawn by Hayao, 'Shuna's Journey'. Derived from the old Tibetan folktale, 'The Prince Who Turned into a Dog', the story features a young prince who crosses a famine‑stricken world in search of a mythical golden grain that might save his people from starvation.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

The cover art from Hayao's epic manga series, 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind', which was first published in 1982 and later adapted into the 1984 TopCraft animated film of the same name. The story revolves around a compassionate young princess who tries to stop warring nations from destroying their already‑ravaged world.

My Neighbor Totoro

An image board for the 1988 Studio Ghibli animated film, 'My Neighbor Totoro'. The film was inspired by Hayao's thoughts on spirituality, along with his childhood memories and some of the places he visited at that time, including the hospital where his mother stayed during her illness and the rural locations around Tokorozawa. At its core, though, 'My Neighbor Totoro' is about two young sisters who cope with change, uncertainty, and the quiet rhythms of rural life by befriending several benevolent spirits nestled in the local forest.

Kiki's Delivery Service

An image board for the 1989 Studio Ghibli animated film, 'Kiki's Delivery Service', which was adapted from a 1985 children's novel of the same name written by Eiko Kadono. The coming-of-age tale focuses on a young witch who, upon turning thirteen, decides to learn more about herself by leaving home and engaging with the residents of a small seaside community.

Porco Rosso

An illustration from Hayao's 1989 fifteen-page watercolor manga, 'The Age of the Flying Boat'. A few years later, the manga was adapted into the 1992 Studio Ghibli animated film, 'Porco Rosso', featuring the adventures of an Italian ex-World War I fighter pilot who's cursed with the face of a pig and working as a bounty hunter.

Spirited Away

An image board for the 2001 Studio Ghibli animated film, 'Spirited Away', which stemmed from Hayao's desire to tell a story for a group of girls he knew, combined with imagery and atmosphere drawn from Japanese folklore and landscapes. The film follows a ten‑year‑old girl who is forced to work in a magical bathhouse to save her parents, until she eventually tries to break free and find her way back home.

Howl's Moving Castle

An image board for the 2004 Studio Ghibli animated film, 'Howl's Moving Castle'. Based on the 1986 novel of the same name written by Diana Wynne Jones, the adventure is about a young woman who's transformed into a ninety-year-old by a jealous witch. The woman soon seeks refuge inside an enigmatic wizard's ramshackle, moving castle, only to find herself entangled in a war she never meant to join.
