Rocky - The Apartment
1818 East Tusculum Street, Kensington, North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
(Rocky's Apartment)

When the film begins, we're introduced to the southpaw, Rocky Balboa (as played by Sylvester Stallone), while he's fighting in the ring against another boxer, Spider Rico (as played by the real-life professional boxer, Pedro Lovell). After winning his fight, Rocky cleans himself up and goes home to recuperate from a cut he sustained above the eye. In real life, Rocky's apartment was split across three different locations. The front of the house was at 1818 East Tusculum Street, North Philadelphia; the stairwell leading up to the apartment was reported to be the interior steps of the Main Street Gym at 318½ South Main Street, Los Angeles; and the inside of Rocky's apartment was in an unknown flophouse nearby in Los Angeles. The Main Street Gym, which is now a parking lot, also doubled as the interior for Rocky's local gym, Mighty Mick's Gym.

Rocky - The Date
The Park Santa Monica Apartments, 500 Broadway, Santa Monica, California, USA
(The Ice Skating Rink)

The following day, Rocky spends most of his time hanging out in his local neighborhood. In the morning, he collects money for the dubious loan shark, Tony Gazzo (as played by Joe Spinell), while in the evening, he meets up with his pal, Paulie Pennino (as played by Burt Young), to ask for permission to take out his sister, Adrian (as played by Talia Shire). Paulie agrees to his friend's request, and the next evening, Rocky takes Adrian to an ice skating rink so the two of them can get to know each other better. This ice skating rink was a real ice skating rink called Ice Capades Chalet. It was located in Santa Monica until it was demolished in 2019 and then replaced by a large, multi-use complex known as The Park Santa Monica Apartments.

Rocky - The Stairs
Philadelphia Museum of Art, 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
(Philadelphia Museum of Art)

During this time, it's revealed that the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Apollo Creed (as played by Carl Weathers), plans to hold a title bout to celebrate America's upcoming bicentennial. However, he's soon informed that his intended opponent is unable to compete, and all other potential replacements are either booked up or incapable of getting into proper shape on such short notice. Since he has already invested heavily in the fight, Apollo chooses to give a local contender a chance to challenge him, namely, Rocky Balboa, who accepts Apollo's proposition and slowly begins to prepare himself. With some help from a local trainer, Mickey Goldmill (as played by Burgess Meredith), Rocky does this by practicing his punching, managing his physical condition, and improving his stamina by running through the streets of Philadelphia, most notably, up the steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Currently, there are two statues of Rocky on display at the museum, one inside and one outside, although one of these statues will be returned to its owner in August 2026.

Rocky - The Fight
Glory Church of Jesus Christ, 1801 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California, USA
(The Auditorium)

At the end of the film, both Rocky and Apollo face off against each other in the ring to see who's the better boxer. Their match is long, hard-fought, and full of ups and downs. It was shot at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles, and it can be seen in several other boxing films, such as 'Raging Bull' (1980), 'Ali' (2001), and 'Million Dollar Baby' (2004). In 2005, a religious group purchased the auditorium and converted it into a house of worship and community venue called the Glory Church of Jesus Christ.
